Fun at Flinders YC

The very first Mobile Tackers at Flinders YC could not have gone any better. The kids were fantastic!

The very first Mobile Tackers at Flinders YC could not have gone any better. The kids were fantastic!

The Mobile Tackers went to Flinders YC and a 5 day program was conducted 27  to 31 Dec 2008.

30 kids participated and were sailing every day. Sailing was great as the Tackers experienced all types of wind conditions from no wind to strong wind warnings. All became competent and confident in getting wet, capsizing , sailing around marks, tacking, gybing, the 'no go zone  and and getting to know their boat including the rigging and the wind directions.

On the last day the Traditional  Flinders YC Junior Cup was held. All participated and with a Le Mans start and finish and a difficult beat back to shore and all succeeded in completing the course.

Plenty of prizes and certificates were awarded after the last sausage sizzle and Flipp, Ranga and Hi Heels getting bombed by plenty of water bombs. Congratulatons to the two Flinders YC scholarships awarded to Jessica and William whom stood out as big improvers during the course. and Jessica and William are to be congratulated.

Special thanks to Flinders YC Commodore Peter Watson and Organiser Nicole Haliday for their huge efforts in making the week a huge success and the Flinders Junior leaders for the fantastic support given to the Boatshed instructors.

The Boatshed can not wait to come back again in 2009!

Tackers September 2008

Tackers is up and running

Rod Austin, Wednesday, 24 September 2008

Weve got our pilot Tackers school holiday program starting this week and next and the kids are having a ball,

MORE than 500 people have passed through the doors of fantastic new Yachting Victoria training facility The Boatshed in Albert Park, since it opened just 10 weeks ago.

The Boatshed programs encompass potential new sailors from as young as 6 years to more experienced sailors completing instructor courses, to disabled and underprivileged kids trying sailing for the very first time.

The Boatshed manager Rod Austin said he was exceptionally pleased with the facility’s flying start and word of mouth was spreading rapidly.

Theres been a fabulous and positive response to our programs so far, Austin said today.

Weve got our pilot Tackers school holiday program starting this week and next and the kids are having a ball, he added.

Seven-year-old Parkdale sailor Stephanie said the best part about the Tackers program was getting to sail the boats by ourselves.

Its been really fun taking the Opti’s out by ourselves and learning lots of new things about sailing and making some new friends as well, Stephanie added.

The program is running from 9am-1pm daily, Monday to Friday during the school holidays.
